    Setting

(Miss Gilespie is standing at the counter of nurses office as teenage boy walks in.)

    MISS GILESPIE:
Good Morning Eddie. What can I do for you?

    EDDIE:
Aw Miss Gilespie, I've got a killer headache, and we're having a big test in History today. I'm gonna flunk it if I can't get this headache to go away. Can I like get an aspirin from you?

    MISS GILESPIE:
I'm sorry Eddie, but I'm not allowed to give out any medication unless it's been prescribed by your doctor, and we have a note on file from your parents giving us permission to dispense it to you.

    EDDIE:
Just for an aspirin? I'm not asking for a prescription drug. Just something for my headache.

    MISS GILESPIE:
I'm sorry, but that's the rules, Eddie. I wish I could help. I can get you out of class for the day so you can lie down for a while.

    EDDIE:
No, I'll just deal with it. (Pause) Hey I know what... If you were to let me have some from your own personal stash, then it wouldn't be an official nusely type of act.

    MISS GILESPIE:
    (Sharply)
Now, Eddie, that could get me fired!

    EDDIE:
    Sorry.

    MISS GILESPIE:
I know, we could call one of your parents at work, and they could fax me a note of permission to give you medication.

    EDDIE:
No, I can't bother them at work for an aspirin. Just never mind. This is really something though. You could give me condoms but not an aspirin.

    MISS GILESPIE:
Well, I'm sorry, but I have to abide by the laws and rules. They really are for your own good.

    EDDIE:
    (Exits)
    (Teen girl timidly approaches)
    ABBY:
    Excuse me, uh, Miss Gilespie?

    MISS GILESPIE:
    Yes?

    ABBY:
Hi. Uh, if you're busy, I can come back later.

    MISS GILESPIE:
No no, come in. What can I do for you? You're Abby, right?

    ABBY:
    Yeah, I'm surprised you remember.

    MISS GILESPIE:
Well I don't always remember everybody, but I do my best. What can I do for you?

    ABBY:
(Looks down, fidgets, fumbles with necklace or clothing)
Well I uh... you see I...

    MISS GILESPIE:
    Go on.

    ABBY:
You se, I uh, we... Tommy and I... (Starts to cry, then begins to let it all spill out very fast)
We only did it once I swear. He said it was alright, oh my God Miss GILESPIE, I'm pregnant. He said this wouldn't happen. I don't know what to do I...

    MISS GILESPIE:
Oh hey, slow down Honey. Slow down and start from the beginning.

    ABBY:
(Continues to cry for a few seconds, but begins to talk punctuated with sniffles, etc.)
Ok. I'm alright. You see Tommy and I had been going out for like four months. He kept wanting me to, you know, like... Well I kept saying no, that I wasn't ready. At first he seemed to accept that, and to respect me for it. After a while though he seemed to lose patience with me and starteds laying all these trips on me, you know? Like if I wouldn't do it, then I must not really care about him and all that. I didn't want to lose him and figured I was gonna do it some day, right? So we did. On New Years Eve. Then within a week or so, It's like he's a different person. He acted like he didn't even care about me any more. When I asked him what was going on, he said... he said that we should both go out with other people.
    (Begins to cry again)

    MISS GILESPIE:
Ok, first things first. Are you absolutely sure you're pregnant?

    ABBY:
I've used three different home pregnancy tests. They were all positive.

    MISS GILESPIE
    And your parents?

    ABBY:
They don't know. My friend Gina's the only one that knows. And now you. I don't know how I'm going to tell them. I... I've always been like "Daddy's Little Girl." They're going to kill me. (Crying)

    MISS GILESPIE:
It's alright Abby. You're going to be alright. You don't have to tell your parents. They don't ever have to know.

    ABBY:
Oh sure, like I can hide it from them. (Sarcasm) "No really, Daddy, I've just been eating a lot, that's all."

    MISS GILESPIE:
LIsten to me Abby. I'm serious. We can take care of this. Have you given any thought to how you're going to deal with this? You're planning to go to college, right?

    ABBY:
Well, I was; I don't know what I'm goint to do now.

    MISS GILESPIE:
Well, I hate to see you throw away your future just because of one mistake. I think we can help you take care of your problem.

    ABBY:
    You mean an abor...
    MISS GILESPIE:
There's a clinic downtown that works with the schools. I can make an appointment for you, and a van will take you there.

    ABBY:
I don't think my parents will...

    MISS GILESPIE:
If they don't know you're pregnant, they'll never have to know about this either. Think about your future. You're only sixteen; you've got you're whole life ahead of you. You won't be able to provide what a child needs, and it sounds like the father isn't up to the responsibility of the job either.

    ABBY:
    I don't know. I mean I hadn't even considered that. Maybe you're right. I can't be a parent yet. I just don't know.

    MISS GILESPIE:
You go home and sleep on it. We've got three girls scheduled to go to the clinic next tuesday. If you decide to, I can add your name to the list.

    ABBY:
But how can I go without my parents knowing?

    MISS GILESPIE:
It's always scheduled in the morning. I can get you a special pass to allow you out of classes. The van comes back about the time school's out. No one's the wiser.

    ABBY:
Thanks Miss Gilespie. I'll think about it and let you know tomorrow, okay?

    MISS GILESPIE:
That sounds good. I'm glad to be of help.

    (Abby exits. Another student enters.)
    BRENDA:
Hi Miss Gilespie. I'm here for my medicine.

    MISS GILESPIE:
Hello Brenda. You do have your parental permission slipfor this month, don't you?

    BRENDA:
    Oh yeah, I almost forgot.
(Takes slip of paper from pocket, and hands it to nurse.)
This is such a hassle. I mean you already have their permission.

    MISS GILESPIE:
I know, but we have to follow the rules. They're there for your protection, you know.
